Toon Walk Nuremberg 2015

If I was a 5 year old german kid, or even an american kid who had lived in germany for a few years, loved TV and sweets (really what kid doesnt), and was not afraid of clowns (I was the kid who went running after Mickey Mouse in Disney World so I would be just fine!) - Toon Walk would be the highlight of my YEAR!

As a full grown adult however, not only was I confused and completely in shock, but couldnt deside whether I wanted to cringe or laugh hysterically. I settled on smiling apologetically at the people in the scary costumes of the parade as they looked at me through the mouth of whatever food/character/monster they had been assigned to.

The intention of starting this parade 3 years ago was so that the kids could have something to do and look forward to, which make sense coming from a country that is primarily kid and family driven. They brought out every beloved character and made a parade through the center of Old Town Nuremberg starting by CIty Point mall, and going past all of the shops to round the corner and head back to St. Lorenz Church. Must have been a huge success because this year is its 3rd annual parade!

For such a non-commercialize country, they sure do know how to advertise! Each and every character was wearing a logo or company name and was accompanied by a guard (I supposed to help guide them through the crowds of children and make sure they dont trip over any) who were also walking advertisements. Every kid knew the name of each character, and screamed their name as they passed! I was even surprised to see Star Wars characters in the parade seeing as it is not a very popular franchise in Europe. they tossed candy, snacks, and free samples at the audience, and parents were handed flyers and coupons for every brand that passed.

About half an hour in to the parade the children took over. It was like watching a storm approaching the shore. At first only small waves, but eventually they grew to highs above your head and you know to run for cover but by that time it is too late. We were against the edge of the parade (had to get a good spot for photos!) and the crowd behind us was 5 people deep. The kids realized there were no adults holding them back from running up to their favorite animal and giving them a nice long hug. At first only one little girl escaped and stood right in the middle of the parade, and soon there was no longer a parade route, just a haphazard line of brightly colored costumed people trapped in a circle of little people.

It was hilarious to watch, horribly organized, and overall a confusing experience. Would I recommend going? Yes, but only if you are under the age of 7 and accompanied by a very drunk adult.

One question though...Why was there a hamburger?
